In 2018, a framed "Girl with Balloon" was sold at a Sotheby's auction for over a million pounds, and immediately after the hammer came down, the artwork started to self-destruct. The bottom part of the artwork passed through a shredder hidden inside the frame, much to the surprise of the auction-goers and the art world.
This self-destructing artwork was later renamed "Love is in the Bin" by Banksy and is considered by many as a new artwork. The incident brought even more attention to Banksy's work and the value of his art in the auction market.
The imagery of the girl and the balloon has been interpreted in many ways, with some seeing it as a symbol of innocence, childhood, or the fleeting nature of happiness. Banksy is known for his thought-provoking and politically-charged works, and "Girl with Balloon" is no exception.
