    Herself is the first print of a portfolio of three screenprints from Warhol’s Ingrid Bergamn portfolio, with each one depicting the esteemed Swedish actress that the series is named after. Printed in 1983, Warhol immortalises Bergman amongst the likes of his other Pop Art stars, such as Marilyn Monroe and Mick Jagger.

    This prints depicts the side profile of the star in a contemplative moment, as she gently rests her head on her perfectly manicured hand. Named Herself, Warhol’s pays tribute to the true nature of the actress, as opposed to her costumed roles in the other prints. Warhol uses a warm colour scheme of blacks, blues, red, lilac and cream. Like much of his work from this decade, Warhol carefully uses transposed blocks of colour to highlight various features, for example the white block emphasises the recognisable face of the Hollywood star. 

    This screenprint is an essential addition to his oeuvre of portraiture, as Warhol provides a commentary on our inability to receive an insight into the true character of Bergman. Not only does she play characters on the screen, she herself is a character. Warhol places Bergman on a print as an object of consumption for the hungry eyes of an audience, in a way echoing that of media and consumer culture.
