    Meaning & History
As the leader of multiple raids and battles against Mexican and American military efforts in southwestern America, Geronimo was well-liked and respected in his community

Geronimo is one of ten screenprints from Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians portfolio, created in 1986. The series explores the mythology and imagination of the West that permeate American culture, with a focus on Old West themes and characters. Not only does the portfolio cover Western American themes and mythology, but it also perfectly captures Warhol's obsession with the West. Warhol would regularly watch western films as a teenager. He would go on to direct his own Westerns, Horse and Lonesome Cowboys. Several well-known western icons, including Annie Oakley, Teddy Roosevelt, and General Custer, are shown in the portfolio alongside Native American symbols and images such as this one.

his artwork features the well-known Native American character Geronimo, the "medicine man" and leader of the Bedonkohe band of the Apache tribe. As the leader of multiple raids and battles against Mexican and American military efforts in southwestern America, he was well-liked and respected in his community. Nonetheless, following a fierce chase through northern Mexico, Geronimo turned himself in to American forces in 1886. The United States took him as a prisoner of war and used him for propaganda purposes. He was transformed into a symbol of Native American identity and used as a spectacle of Native Americans, where tourists would pay to see him and take bits of his possessions. Geronimo's life and actions were eclipsed as a result of his exploitation and caricature, and images of him in popular culture became unduly generalised as a cliché of Native American identity. The use of Warhol's trademark screen printing technique in the creation of the print contributes to its satirical political criticism. The ability of the screen printing process to generate large quantities of widely disseminated pictures is well established. The method is a reflection of the widespread distribution of pictures in popular culture and the consequences that arise from the ability of mass media to shape our perception of the past.

Warhol often considered his art to be politically neutral, but there's no denying that the portfolio presents the public's and Hollywood's idealised view of the West to viewers. The mention of Geronimo 384 instantly brings up questions about historical depiction, war, and exploitation. Geronimo is decontextualized by Warhol's Pop Art portrayal, which forces viewers to use their own imaginations to fill in the gaps about Geronimo and the wider Wild West milieu. Warhol depicts Geronimo as a colossal historical symbol at the same time that he represents larger-than-life characters like Chairman Mao or Marilyn Monroe. Consequently, Geronimo joins a group of individuals who are crucial to comprehending American culture as a whole when he is included in the Warhol canon
