The image depicts perhaps one of the most exciting moments in modern day history: Buzz Aldrin’s first steps on the moon

Moonwalk is an astronomically vibrant and eye-catching screenprint, created by Andy Warhol in 1987. This, and its pink sister, were created a matter of mere months before Warhol’s untimely death. Andy Warhol’s Moonwalk portfolio was originally intended to be part of a wider series that explored iconic TV moments from throughout the 20th century, capturing moments from the Beatles to Martin Luther King Jr., and, of course, the 1969 moon landing. The set conjures images of the United States winning the space race and the 1960s technological revolution.

The image depicts perhaps one of the most exciting moments in modern day history: Buzz Aldrin’s first steps on the moon. The original photograph was taken in 1969 by fellow astronaut, and first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, and has become a symbol of America’s technological and social dominance ever since. Aldrin dons his signature astronaut suit, next to a reversed American flag on his right. Both the suit and the flag are washed in a light yellow, giving the print an otherworldly-ness; it seems as if it is a scene from a Hollywood sci-fi movie rather than reality. Warhol has exemplified the texture of the moon’s rugged surface by outlining the craters and crevices in a mixture of bright yellow and orange, which contrast beautifully with Warhol’s blue rendering of the moon’s surface.

Although the creation of the portfolio was cut short, Moonwalk shows Warhol’s amazing technical abilities and creative development, which is a defining feature of his 1980s work. The shift in focus from portraying commercial elements of American culture to historically significant issues and concepts unique to Warhol's era, such as honouring the first landing on the moon, further marks a shift in his artistry.
