The image depicts the most incredible part of the Apollo 11 mission; mans first steps on the moon, a landmark event of the 20th century.

In Andy Warhol’s Moonwalk, the artist transforms an image of Buzz Aldrin on the moon into a spectacular pop art phenomenon. The image is one that is quintessentially American, highlighting their victory of the space race and their successive technological advancement. This image was broadcast to millions in perhaps the most exciting TV event of the 20th century almost 20 years on, and the screenprint was originally intended to be a part of a major portfolio entitled TV. The portfolio aimed to highlight key points in the history of television, highlighting its newfound cultural significance. However, the series was left incomplete due to Warhol’s untimely death, making this piece an incredibly significant and sought after treasure.

The image depicts the most incredible part of the Apollo 11 mission; mans first steps on the moon, a landmark event of the 20th century. Despite the image being one that is so instantly recognisable, in a true Warholian manner the artist places his own Pop Art spin on the image. The astronaut is highlighted in a bright pink, which is similarly splashed on the American flag. Despite this, the flag retains its iconic red, white, and blue colour scheme. The surface of the moon is doused in a rich blue which compliments the hot pink touches beautifully.

Moonwalk is a clear example of Warhol's ability to recognise a classic American image. Warhol adds his own distinctive touch by layering and sketching over the original with vivid colour blocks that transform it into a Pop Art icon. Even though it depicts a particular point in history, the piece is as timeless and classic as the moon landing itself, that will appeal to collectors even in the present day.
