    Meaning & History
Warhol's print serves as a constant reminder of the Pines Barrens tree frog's endangered status, turning the picture of the endangered species into a Pop Art icon and bringing it to the level of fine art.

Andy Warhol's 1983 print, Pine Barrens Tree Frog, from the Endangered Species Series, is a striking piece that draws the eye right away. Warhol produced ten silk-screened prints in the Endangered Species portfolio in 1983 which were commissioned by Ronald and Frayda Feldman, art collectors and environmental activists. The purpose of the prints was to draw attention to the suffering of endangered species and to the value of conservation initiatives. Warhol's use of vivid hues in this series of ten prints is reminiscent of one another, but their individuality also highlights how uncommon these animals are that the artist has given the "star treatment." Due to their unusual colour augmentation, Warhol's depictions of makeup-clad animals allude to his famous portraits of movie stars and superstars, such as those in his Marilyn (1962) series. Warhol's print serves as a constant reminder of the Pines Barrens tree frog's endangered status, turning the picture of the endangered species into a Pop Art icon and bringing it to the level of fine art.

The lavender branch, with its muted colours, contrasts with the navy-blue background, drawing attention to the vibrant frog without overpowering it. The frog is perched on a deep blue tree branch, with hand-drawn white lines softly outlining its outlines. A scene from night is suggested by the background, which is covered in an even deeper blue that almost looks black. The frog perches on the branch with assurance. Fluorescent orange and green hues that dominate the composition, along with prominent yellow undertones that colour parts of the frog's body and specks of colour that weave and layer, create a dynamic piece that gives Warhol creative licence to play with colour.
