Andy Warhol Cover of Flash (F & S II.32)
Meaning & History"The reoccurring motifs form an important part of Warhol’s visual language as a fundamentally graphic artist."
Cover of Flash - November 22, 1963 is a screenprint on cloth produced by the artist in 1968. Its source image is a double-page spread of a well-known magazine dedicated to contemporary art, Flash.
Throughout his ground-breaking career, Warhol was commissioned by a number of publications, demonstrating his status not just as a sole artist but as a pioneer and member of the wider art community and movement that was Pop Art in the 1960s.
Flash, based in Italy, was known (and is still in print today) for showcasing the avant-garde art of the time, and featured cover art by seminal artists. Warhol’s cover bears the screenprinted floral and shape motifs that are seen on his other ready-made works such as SAS Passenger Ticket and Lincoln Center Ticket of the same period. The reoccurring motifs form an important part of Warhol’s visual language as a fundamentally graphic artist.
