"The portfolio captures the collective mania of the aftermath of the assassination."

Printed in 1968, this portfolio acts as a cultural artifact of the aftermath of President JFK’s assassination in 1963. The Flash portfolio was named after the ‘flashes’ of violent and disturbing images splashed across newspaper headlines and played on a constant cycle within the news, to be consumed by people across the globe from the comfort of their living room.

Andy Warhol was fascinated by the American people, and with their obsession with death and violence. This obsession was exemplified after the assassination of JFK, due to the media circus that ensued, reporting constantly on the tragedy. The portfolio captures the collective mania of the aftermath of the assassination, appropriating advertisements, campaign trail propaganda and newspaper photographs. His use of ‘low’ art materials as a base inspiration are transformed into the realm of ‘high’ art. Warhol believed that this constant circulation of images of death and destruction desensitised the American public, shaping a collective opinion and consciousness.

This print depicts a closeup of President John F Kennedy, flashing a charming smile to the viewer.  His portrait is repeated and overlayed several times, meaning the presence of Kennedy is undeniable. The late President seems like an apparition, faded into a white background, creating an overall sense of the ephemeral nature of life.
