Featuring artists across a range of periods and styles, the busy auction saw many pieces snapped up by eager collectors. From Picasso ceramics to KAWS, Miro to Tapies, the wonderfully curated auction held a suite of strong works.
In particular, the results for Banksy signed prints (Choose your Weapon, Kate and Napalm) and Banksy unsigned prints (Girl with Balloon) all surpassed their estimates by some margin. The stand out being Kate Moss which went over upper estimate by over £59,000 GBP.
Elsewhere, the Andy Warhol original screenprints showcased through iconic pieces such as the Soup Cans and Marilyns, all performed exceptionally well showing the resonance that Warhol’s works continue to hold.
David Hockney prints in the form of his beautiful pools, landscapes and flowers all comfortably surpassed their estimations. Lithograph of Water Made of Thick and Thin Lines and Two Light Blue Washes (T.G. 250, M.C.A.T 207) in particular went for over double its upper estimate of £60,000 and went for £128,000 GBP allin.
Much like Warhol, fellow pop artist Roy Lichentenstein prints for sale also did very well. The beautiful selection was a strong example of the artist’s unbridaled vision and style with the results reflecting his universal appeal.
What is particularly exciting about this set of results is the depth of the spread. Indeed, 2021 often witnessed auctions where particular artists performed better than others and often with a detrimental effect. Forgoing the trend, Phillips’ auction showed both the appetite of the market and the diversity of interests and demand.
