'Faces are the most interesting things we see; other people fascinate me, and the most interesting aspect of other people – the point where we go inside them – is the face. It tells all.’  David Hockney

David Hockney has created many portraits of his beloved mother, Laura Hockney, depicted in drawings, etchings, paintings and prints over his career but Portrait of Mother II is the second of two he features in his pioneering, Moving Focus series.
Portrait of Mother II is a signed lithograph, one of an edition of 20. Unlike the naturalist expressionism of Portrait of Mother I, Hockney pushes his artistic language in Portrait of Mother II playing with abstraction and Cubist techniques to create a beguiling depiction of his mother figure. The viewer is not privy to her narrative or the context of the sitting: she is therefore stripped of identity to be rendered as not just mother of Hockney but a universal representation of mother love.
In the image, Hockney portrays her from a profile; she is depicted wearing her homely, deep blue jumper with frilly collar, recognisable from the first image, she is sleeping in her chair and her hands are gently clasped together in front of her. Yet in this rendering, Hockney distorts the viewer’s perspective of her: her facial features are depicted through a cube, similarly to in the artist’s Image of Celia, the Picasso inspired, cubist rendering of his friend, Celia Birtwell.
Whilst the face is abstracted and designed to skew our immediate vision of her, the portrait is still executed as an ode to the maternal love and bond between parent and child. Hockney uses his characteristic lively colourings, but they are still softly rendered in warm shades of brown, blue and white.
In Portrait of Mother II, Hockney creates a new visual language around his portraiture style, evolving his techniques, whilst simultaneously creating a dialogue between past and present art forms.
