'Ironically Hockney had gone to California to create the weather conditions but realised there isn’t much weather there, so for Snow he had ventured to Palm Springs to capture it but Hockney’s exquisite eye for composition enables him to create a feeling of the transience of weather: whilst snow might be falling now, new seasons will soon arise.'

In Snow Without Colour, a monochrome study that precedes his later print work, Snow, David Hockney merges many of his characteristic styles and passions: the lithograph is an ode to the 18th Japanese artist, Hokusai, and his woodblock printing traditions, whilst the naïve style of the image is a nod to children’s fairytales or even a Haiku poem, and the landscape composition is even self-referential to other Hockney works, where he depicts the rolling hills of his Yorkshire hometown.
The depiction of the rolling hills laden in snow is so immediate to the print surface that as a viewer we ‘feel’ like we could be walking in them: relating back to Hockney’s Moving Focus series where the new experimental print techniques he had discovered, created a sense of motion, enabling us to ‘feel’ the space and our surroundings. The scattered rocks that sit at the forefront of the picture also relate back to Hockney’s photo collage works, in  Walking in the Zen Garden at the Ryoanji Temple Kyoto, 1983.
The white drops of falling snow in the background keep drawing in the viewer, reflective of Hockney’s naïve style that has a lightness similar to illustrations in a children’s book. Ironically Hockney had gone to California to create the weather conditions but realised there isn’t much weather there, so for Snow he had ventured to Palm Springs to capture it but Hockney’s exquisite eye for composition enables him to create a feeling of the transience of weather: whilst snow might be falling now, new seasons will soon arise.
