    Yosemite Suite No. 16 is one of David Hockney’s most innovative artworks from the inventive Yosemite Suite series, in which he depicted the grandiose vistas of the Yosemite National Park on an Ipad.
    “I just happen to be an artist who uses the iPad, I’m not an iPad artist. It’s just a medium. But I am aware of the revolutionary aspects of it, and its implications,’ commented Hockney.
    Yosemite Suite No.16 is a fragmented composition, which highlights the possibilities of the digital medium with colour, shading, brushing and round lines. Hockney simply depicts the forest land of Yosemite National Park, whilst we can’t be sure, it could be along a forest trail, such as the Washburn Trail, which takes walkers along the giant sequoias of the Mariposa Grove.
    The image is fully immersive as if the viewer ‘can’t see the wood for the trees’ as they work their way through the vast forest scape. Hockney skilfully creates a three-dimensional image of this parkland from a flat two-dimensional screen surface: he works with jagged lines, splodges, blotching and dots to create this richly, textured effect.
    Yosemite Suite, No. 16 is one of the clearest examples of Hockney using the digital medium to examine and redefine the viewer’s perception of the natural landscape: his mastery of colour and form are undiminished by the digital medium instead evolving his visual language for a whole new generation and audience.
