"Both inspired by and reviving the German Expressionist movement, which at the time, challenged society by celebrating the individual and their psychological interior, Lichtenstein continued to explore the role of the artist and creator."

Dr Waldmann, 1980 is taken from Roy Lichtenstein’s Expressionist Woodcut series and is one of his most emblematic and striking artworks. The signed print is from an edition of 50 created from woodcut with embossing on Arches cover paper. Dr Waldmann pays homage to one of modern Europe’s most seminal characters: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, as the German professor in the story is named, Dr Waldman.
Both inspired by and reviving the German Expressionist movement, which at the time, challenged society by celebrating the individual and their psychological interior, Lichtenstein continued to explore the role of the artist and creator.
The cropped image of this mysterious Dr, lost in his thoughts, references German Expressionist artist, Otto Dix’s famous work, Dr Mayer Hermann. Lichtenstein’s image, though, is starker and more menacing, confronting the viewer with a violent collision of bold colours, lines, and jagged angles, directly at the surface.
All Lichtenstein’s pop art signatures are recognisable: he articulates his subject’s face with graphic black lines, delineated between the layers of composition, bold primary colours scream from the print’s surface, diagonal striped lines and ben day dots make up the flat plane pictorial artwork. Yet the vivid colours, (Yves Klein blue), crisp lines and abstracted surface also hint of other famous art movements, cubism, futurism and surrealism.
Lichtenstein dramatises his lead character by giving the viewer no sight of any background apart from the suggestion of a seascape behind a barely visible window pane. Dr Waldmann’s abstracted facial features, which include a round mirror formed across his head, requires viewers to wonder at what we are seeing: Lichtenstein asks how do truth and illusion co-exist in art.
Dr Waldmann is one of Lichtenstein’s cleverest artworks: he combines pop art aesthetics with distinctive shading techniques and defined shapes from the past to explore his favourite subject, art about art.
