"Like all the Interior series prints, Modern Room doesn’t need a human presence, the spatiality and the viewer’s own narratives formed about this everyday scene become the protagonist of this acclaimed artwork."

Modern Room is part of Lichtenstein’s Interior series produced in the last six years of his life, which not only utilise a number of techniques evolved from earlier prints, but also are illustrative of his commentary on American culture and Art movements of his time. This signed lithograph, woodcut and screen print on 4-ply Paper Technologies was manufactured as part of a limited edition of 60.
Fitting with the rest of the series, Modern Room depicts a pristine interior scene that on first glance appears sterile, like a cardboard cut-out from an advertisement (Lichtenstein was actually inspired by furniture advertisements to create this series). Unlike the other prints in the series, Modern Room utilises bold painterly gestures of thick lines and flat surface planes that obscure perspective.
The familiar modern home décor – sofa, chairs, table and shelf – appear two dimensional to a viewer through the visual distortion of Lichtenstein’s characteristic ben day dots, delineated graphic lines, pop colours and slanted diagonal stripes against the flat pictorial plane.
Lichtenstein’s sardonic portrayal of this idealised surburban domestic scenario, includes references to artists of his time; his own pop art contemporary, Warhol’s famous Mao Zedong silkscreen portrait glaringly hangs from the back wall. The menace of Mao’s famous expression adds an intrusive tone to this otherwise conventional interior scene, heightened by the fact there are no other real figures in the room: is this version of domestic bliss that society so idealises as perfect as it first seems?
Like all the Interior series prints, Modern Room doesn’t need a human presence, the spatiality and the viewer’s own narratives formed about this everyday scene become the protagonist of this acclaimed artwork.
