    Roy Lichtenstein’s Painting in a Gold Frame is arguably the most immediate depiction of the central theme of his ‘Paintings’ series: an exploration of artistic originality. As the print title suggests, the image is a direct representation of another image, a ‘Painting in a Gold Frame.’ 
    Painting in a Gold Frame is a woodcut, lithograph, screenprint, and collage on arches 88 paper from an edition of 60. The intricate composition immediately conjures images of formal portraiture, in that the left bottom corner is a classic gold frame mounted on a wall. However, Lichtenstein juxtaposes the traditional framing with cartoon- like strokes, black and yellow wall stripes and bold dark green and cream colourways. The distorted visuals are also accentuated through the merging of hand painted and machine made patterns: the pastel toned, painterly brushstrokes contrast with the pop printed stripes with black delineated outlines.
