"Like the other prints in the series, on initial glance, the room appears sterile and non-descript; this could be any quotidian interior set up, illustrative of an American culture consumed by portraying domestic perfection."

Roy Lichtenstein’s The Den is one of eight signed and dated prints from the Interior series, which was based on domestic interiors, generally inspired by furniture advertisements from the yellow pages and telephone directories. Like the other woodcut and screen prints in the series, on initial glance, the room appears sterile and non-descript; this could be any quotidian interior set up, illustrative of an American culture consumed by portraying domestic perfection.
The print name suggests a space for cosy subterfuge: but through his exploration of the visual language of interior design, Lichtenstein layers his seemingly simple artwork with multiple interpretations. The artwork features his pop art characteristics: bold colours, delineated black outlines, geometric shapes and stylized forms, which elevate the typical furniture, lamps and decorative objects in the room with visual dynamism through his pop art prism.
Lichtenstein uses his blocks of ben day dots and diagonal stripes to add dimension and textural depth to the composition. The flat, graphic quality of the image is reminiscent of comic book panels, with each element carefully rendered in Lichtenstein's signature style. The artist plays with the viewer’s perception through reflective techniques; the small table is made of glass and we can see through the surface to the base below, alternating black lines create shine on the surfaces and the bold patterning creates tonality.
Whilst The Den initially seems like a relic from a time past, under Lichtenstein’s sophisticated vision, it becomes an exploration of our perception of home as a comfort and familiarity.
