Campbell's Soup Oyster Stew ( F & S. ii 60)
The art movements of the time prioritised artist’s ability to convey emotions such as love and anger through abstract composition, delving into themes of the human condition and nature. In contrast, Warhol’s soup cans do not intend to be a display of technical prowess or abstract painting.
Andy Warhol pushed the boundaries of what could be considered as ‘art’ in his revolutionary Campbell’s Soup Cans II portfolio, created in 1969. Oyster Stew is the seventh screenprint in this series, where Warhol depicted ten flavours of the Campbell’s soup can. This series comes after Warhol’s original Campbell’s soup cans series, created the year before, but Warhol’s use of an advanced screen-printing process, and brighter, vibrant colours allows a likeness to the soup can that is as close as possible to the real thing.
The soup cans series was created at a time when what was considered ‘art’ was that of the Abstract Expressionism. The art movements of the time prioritised artist’s ability to convey emotions such as love and anger through abstract composition, delving into themes of the human condition and nature. In contrast, Warhol’s soup cans do not intend to be a display of technical prowess or abstract painting. Rather, this series is a highly conceptual one, which was revolutionary at the time. It is no wonder they received such controversy at the time of creation. This series is intrinsically linked to Warhol’s artistic philosophy; he drew much of his inspiration throughout his artistic oeuvre from the advancement of 20th century American industries, and the phenomenon of celebrity worship and consumerism. Not only did Warhol see the beauty in the overlooked, but he also saw commonplace objects, such as the lowly soup can, as alluring, and recognised the possibilities of popular commercial products to represents the contemporary American experience. To Warhol, the soup can was the epitome of aesthetic perfection, and he saw it to be as socially worthy of a celebrity status akin to that of superstars like Marilyn Monroe or Mick Jagger which appear in some of his other iconic portfolios. Warhol’s soup can portfolio is a delicious one, challenging the way we consume art.
