    Edition 632 unique prints divided as follows: 40 portfolios containing four prints each, signed and numbered in pencil on verso. The remaining 472 prints were used by architects Johnson & Burgee for the Hotel Marquette, Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1981, upon removal from the hotel, these prints were signed, numbered 1/470 – 470/470, and dated in pencil on verso, and two were marked “HC”; they were stamped in black on verso “Hotel Marquette Prints.”

  • Sunset (F & S. II 85)

    Through his use of colour, Warhol transforms the traditional sunset into an abstract Pop Art piece, placing nature alongside an oeuvre of artificiality.

    Sunset is a screenprint created by Andy Warhol in 1972, as part of a wider Sunset portfolio. The portfolio was commissioned by the architectural firm Johnson and Burgee to produce 632 prints to celebrate the opening of the Hotel Marquette in Minneapolis. 

    The artist used three screens for each broad strip seen in each print: one for the background, one for the horizon, and one for the sun, triumphantly conveying the permutations of each phase. Sunset II.85 depicts a harmonious gradient of red purple, greens, complete with a bold orange sun in the middle. Through his use of colour, Warhol transforms the traditional sunset into an abstract Pop Art piece, placing nature alongside an oeuvre of artificiality.

    Moving away from the garish imagery of artificial consumer culture and celebrity worship, as well as the dark meanings behind his death and disaster series, Warhol has instead chosen to depict a universal symbol of natural beauty. As Warhol was an artist that was known for capturing the zeitgeist of his times, this screenprint which depicts a timeless yet transient moment stands out amongst Warhol’s oeuvre.
