Sunset (F & S. II 87)
“I filmed so many sunsets for that project, but I never got one that satisfied me”
This screenprint, created by Andy Warhol in 1972, is part of his larger Sunset series, which features the same image rendered in various colours, as if reflecting the shifting gradients of a sunset throughout the evening. The series was commissioned by the architectural firm Johnson and Burgee to produce 632 prints in celebration of the Hotel Marquette’s opening in Minneapolis. In this particular print, Warhol captures the fleeting beauty of a sunset with a blend of pinks and purples, centred by a blue sun. The Sunset portfolio stands out in Warhol’s body of work for its timeless subject matter, marking a departure from his typical focus on consumer culture and celebrity.
The sunset theme seems to hold personal significance for Warhol. In 1964, he embarked on a short film project titled Sunset, but it was never completed. He filmed sunsets in various locations, from San Francisco to New York, yet confessed, “I filmed so many sunsets for that project, but I never got one that satisfied me”—a sentiment that echoes the elusive nature of sunsets. Now, with screenprint as his medium rather than film, Warhol appears to have fulfilled his quest for the perfect sunset, one crafted in his own imagined colours rather than captured by the camera.
