$ (F & S. II 279)
As Warhol astutely noted, ‘I like money on the wall. Say you were going to buy a painting. I think you should take that money, tie it up, and put it on the wall. Then when someone visited you the first thing they would see is money on the wall.’
Warhol once remarked, “Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.” This statement reflects his embrace of consumer culture, which is evident in his portrayal of the dollar sign as both an artistic motif and a status symbol. Warhol's Dollar Sign series can be interpreted as a critique—or perhaps an embrace—of the art market, which treats artworks as luxury goods. By turning the dollar sign itself into art, Warhol draws attention to the intersection of art, commerce, and value in American society. As Arthur Danto stated,‘Warhol’s dollar sign is as much an emblem of America as the flag’. Therefore, there is something distinctly American in the bright green and red colours of this print.
Similar to his earlier works like the Campbell's Soup Cans or Marilyn Diptych, Warhol uses repetition to explore the ubiquity of his subject matter. However, unlike the mechanical precision of his screen prints from the 1960s, this Dollar Sign print incorporates a sense of hand-drawn spontaneity, with the outlines of the dollar signs appearing loose and gestural. Therefore, Warhol has aptly transformed a symbol of commercialism into a commercial product itself. As Warhol astutely noted, ‘I like money on the wall. Say you were going to buy a painting. I think you should take that money, tie it up, and put it on the wall. Then when someone visited you the first thing they would see is money on the wall.’
