Whilst this could technically be any rustic, picturesque home in the countryside, Hockney imbues In Front of House Looking South with a charming, lived in quality. In an intimate ode to his home, the ‘quintessentially Norman’ area which has stayed true to its roots, and even Monet’s Impressionist depictions of the nearby, Giverny region, Hockney creates a discourse on place, memory and even art history.

In Front of House Looking South is the final of four inkjet print on paper artworks, David Hockney created of his 17th century rustic home, Le Grande Cour, ‘his paradise’ in the Normandy region of France.
Part of his third series focusing on nature, ‘The Arrival of Spring, Normandy,’ Hockney depicts the changing seasons along with the vibrant surrounding nature and his 17th century home, which so entranced him, he moved to Normandy full time in 2019.
Portraying the other side of the thatched cottage to ‘In Front of House Looking North,’ this artwork seems at once intimate and familiar: Hockney portrays his beloved new 17th century French home in rustic brown shades contrasted with the vibrant green palette of his surrounding 12-acre garden.  In the distance one can see a planted tree in the far corner of the lawn and one of the two neighbouring barns, which Hockney converted into his studio (see In the Studio). Three cars are also parked in the driveway.
