Andy Warhol was unlike any other artist of his time. Rather than seeking to convey the purest forms of human expression like the artists of Abstract Expressionism, Warhol turned to a rather unlikely source of inspiration: the Campbell’s soup can. Cheddar Cheese is one of ten screenprints included in his 1969 Campbell’s Soup Cans II portfolio. Each screenprint from the series depicts a different flavour of Campbell’s soup, created so lifelike to the original, you almost want to eat it!

Warhol turned the supermarket into his creative playground, finding a muse in the shelves stocking Campbell’s soup cans. Warhol saw the beauty in the overlooked objects of America, and wanted to transform them into symbols of ‘high art’. If Campbells soup was such a key part of everyday American culture, why couldn’t it be a part of ‘culture’ in the art scene? Pop Art was a movement that used these quintessential elements of the American way of living, to create art that was instantly recognisable to all. Through this series, Warhol changed the cultural landscape forever, poking fun at the ‘highbrow’ nature of the art world. Warhol put consumer culture at the forefront of the ‘American experience’, not offering a critique of it, but rather expressing his fascination with it. This fascination with capitalism remained a key part of Warhol’s artistic oeuvre, as he continued to draw inspiration for his other series, such as Ads, where he reappropriated American adverts into art.
