Andy Warhol Cologne Cathedral (F & S II.361-364)
Meaning & History"Each example in the suite features diamond dust, a fitting bedazzlement for the immense architectural and religious importance of the Cathedral."
Cologne Cathedral is a portfolio of four screenprints executed in 1985 of Germany’s most renowned landmark. Each example in the suite features diamond dust, a fitting bedazzlement for the immense architectural and religious importance of the Cathedral.
In each screenprint Cologne Cathedral is shown from a direct angle towards its very height, emphasising that the church is one of the tallest in the world. Warhol has also outlined the impressive Gothic architectural detail in traced lines, in an array of colours, giving the cathedral a crystalline and three dimensional appearance. Each colour rendition bestows the Cathedral with an entirely different personality; 361 in reds and blues appears vibrant and impressive, whilst in 364 the cathedral appears magical and mysterious, dissolving into its black background. Warhol rarely used land or cityscapes as subject matter in his works. Most notably, Brooklyn Bridge was further immortalised by the artist in his signature pop-art style.
