Electric Chair (F & S. II 75)
‘When you see a gruesome picture over and over again, it doesn’t really have an effect.’
Electric Chair (F&S II.75) is a screenprint created in 1971, as part of Andy Warhol’s electric chairs series. This portfolio was part of Warhol’s wider Death and Disaster series, which explored the darker side of the latter half of the twentieth century. Within this series, Warhol points out the grisly side of American society, and their obsession with death and disaster, avidly consuming violence within the media.
The Electric Chair holds a stark presence within the screenprint. The electric chair, a lifeless and minimally detailed object, provides rich grounds for interpretation regarding mechanisation. This piece of machinery, devoid of consciousness, paradoxically serves as the instrument of destruction. This sense of death and destruction contrasts with the bright pink wash across the print. Warhol’s powerful repetition of the symbol of the electric chair throughout the series underscores the desensitisation prevalent in modern life: ‘When you see a gruesome picture over and over again, it doesn’t really have an effect.’ -
