    Andy Warhol Flowers (F & S II.6)

Flowers is a vibrant Andy Warhol lithograph executed in 1964 and part of the artist’s celebrated Flowers series. Based on a photograph of hibiscus blooms by Patricia Caulfield, the work transforms a natural subject into a bold Pop Art image through flattened forms and intense colour. Departing from Warhol’s familiar themes of celebrity and consumerism, Flowers highlights his experimentation with abstraction and decorative imagery. The print demonstrates Warhol’s confident command of colour and composition, establishing Flowers as one of his most recognisable and enduring bodies of work within twentieth-century art.

  • About Andy Warhol Flowers

Executed in 1964, Flowers is a single lithograph by Andy Warhol that exemplifies the artist’s exploration of colour, form, and repetition. The image reappropriates Patricia Caulfield’s photograph Hibiscus Flowers, reducing it to four simplified blooms rendered in vivid orange and red against lush green grass. Warhol abandons depth and detail in favour of flat, graphic colour blocks, pushing the floral motif toward abstraction. At the time, the work surprised critics accustomed to Warhol’s focus on consumer culture and celebrity imagery. Yet Flowers reveals the strength of Warhol’s aesthetic language independent of subject matter. The motif proved enduring: Warhol revisited it repeatedly, including in later Flowers portfolios. The series stands as a hallmark of Pop Art, balancing natural imagery with mechanised reproduction and bold visual impact.
