Andy Warhol Frolunda Hockey Player (F & S II.366)
Meaning & History"The work is dynamic and exciting, paying tribute to the new precedent Warhol set for portraying athletes in art."
Frolunda Hockey Player is a single screenprint executed by the artist in 1986, just one year before his untimely passing. It depicts the legendary Swedish ice hockey player, Christer Kellgren, who appears mid-skate, although Warhol has removed the ice floor and created a solid blackground. The work is dynamic and exciting, paying tribute to the new precedent Warhol set for portraying athletes in art.
Warhol had devoted an entire series to figures in sports entitled Athletes in 1977, recognising that they possessed the same celebrity status as his previous portraits of film stars. The present work was comissioned by the Art Now Gallery in Gotenborg, Sweden, the home city of Kellgren’s team Frolunda, and is a fantastic example of Warhol’s engagement with non-American culture.
