Geronimo is one of ten screenprints from Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians portfolio, created in 1986. The series explores the mythology and imagination of the West that permeate American culture, with a focus on Old West themes and characters. He would go on to direct his own Westerns, Horse and Lonesome Cowboys. The United States took him as a prisoner of war and used him for propaganda purposes. He was transformed into a symbol of Native American identity and used as a spectacle of Native Americans, where tourists would pay to see him and take bits of his possessions. Geronimo's life and actions were eclipsed as a result of his exploitation and caricature, and images of him in popular culture became unduly generalised as a cliché of Native American identity. The use of Warhol's trademark screen printing technique in the creation of the print contributes to its satirical political criticism. The ability of the screen printing process to generate large quantities of widely disseminated pictures is well established. The method is a reflection of the widespread distribution of pictures in popular culture and the consequences that arise from the ability of mass media to shape our perception of the past.
