Goethe (F & S. II 270)
‘In characteristic Warholian fashion, the artist reimagines both a historical figure and a classic painting, integrating them into the new narrative of Pop Art history.’
Goethe is a portfolio of four screenprints created by Warhol in 1982 from Warhol's Goethe portfolio, each depicting the renowned poet and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Germany’s greatest intellectuals and a precursor to the Romantic movement.
In Warhol's portrayal, Goethe appears deep in thought, his gaze directed away from the viewer. He is dressed in the loose-fitting coat and wide-brimmed hat typical of his era. However, Warhol gives the eighteenth-century figure a modern twist, recolouring him in vibrant blues, pinks, and oranges—a bold, Pop Art palette.
Warhol based this portrait on one of the most iconic images of Goethe, Goethe in the Roman Campagna by J.H.W. Tischbein, which he encountered during a visit to the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. In characteristic Warholian fashion, the artist reimagines both a historical figure and a classic painting, integrating them into the new narrative of Pop Art history.
