    Andy Warhol Grace Kelly (F & S II.305)

Warhol’s Grace Kelly (1984) captures the timeless elegance of Grace Kelly, rivalling other female icons within Andy Warhol’s Pop pantheon. Published by the Institute of Contemporary Art, the screenprint pays tribute not only to Kelly’s Hollywood stardom but also to her later role as Princess of Monaco. For Kelly, Warhol reserved a restrained palette and delicate, precise linework, creating a portrait that is classical, refined, and luminous; an image that reflects her unique position between cinematic glamour and European aristocracy.

  • About Andy Warhol Grace Kelly

Based on a still from Kelly’s first film, Fourteen Hours, the portrait presents an extreme close-up of her face set against a pale blue, single-colour background—a hallmark of Warhol’s large-scale celebrity prints. Her features remain largely white-grey, enhancing her porcelain complexion and fine bone structure, while subtle accents of colour trace her lips, eyes, and hair with elegant restraint. This compositional refinement distinguishes the work from Warhol’s more dramatic portrayal of Marilyn Monroe, whose bold hues and heightened contrasts suggest spectacle and vulnerability. By contrast, Kelly’s image conveys poise and dignity, reflecting her transition into Monaco’s royal sphere through marriage to Rainier III. Created with the blessing of her family and in collaboration with the Princess Grace Foundation, the portrait stands as both homage and icon.
