    Andy Warhol Jimmy Carter I (F & S II.150)

    Jimmy Carter I (1976) is the first screenprint in Andy Warhol’s three-part series portraying presidential candidate Jimmy Carter. Commissioned by the Democratic National Committee at Carter’s request, the print reflects Warhol’s cultural influence and his perceived ability to engage younger voters. At a time when political image-making was becoming increasingly mediated through mass culture, Warhol’s Pop aesthetic offered a powerful visual tool. The work stands as a significant example of art intersecting directly with electoral politics during the 1970s.

  • About Andy Warhol Jimmy Carter

    In Jimmy Carter , Warhol presents the candidate in a formal pose, dressed in a suit with his hand resting thoughtfully against his chin. Characteristic of his portrait practice in the 1970s, Warhol draws over a photographic source, tracing and emphasising Carter’s eyes to create a subtly disquieting intensity. At the time this image was produced, Carter was still striving for national recognition and faced criticism from opponents. The seriousness of the composition reflects that precarious moment in his campaign. In contrast, the later Jimmy Carter II portrays him smiling after securing electoral success. As with his depictions of figures such as Mao and Lenin, Warhol explores how political authority is constructed through media imagery, demonstrating his acute awareness of power, celebrity, and public perception.
