    Meaning & History
Jimmy Carter is a foremost example of Warhol's power to incite voters. Carter saw that the pop artist's reach would help his campaign.

Jimmy Carter I is the first screenprint in a series of three released in 1976, of presidential candidate Jimmy Carter. It was commissioned for the democratic committee by Carter himself in the hope that it would incite young people to vote, and is thus is indicative of Warhol’s social currency.

In this portrait,Carter appears serious and formal, wearing a suit with his hand resting on his chin. As his typical with Warhol’s methods of the seventies, he has illustrated over the photograph. In this case Warhol has traced over Carter’s eyes, giving a slightly unnerving effect to the image. Notably at the time of this portrait, the candidate was struggling to receive recognition and was mocked by his opponents. Warhol’s second portrait of the series, Jimmy Carter II is in direct contrast to this image as he appears smiling and relaxed, having won the vote.

Warhol would explore politicians in his artworks across his career. Examining the media reach, saturation and reverence that such public figures would provoke other examples include Mao, Edward Kennedy and Lenin.Explore Andy Warhol prints for sale.
