Based on a Polaroid photograph taken by the artist, the work reflects Warhol’s established portrait process, which began with photographing his sitter before translating the image into screenprint. • About Andy Warhol Karen Kain

By 1980, Warhol was producing numerous commissioned portraits of influential cultural figures, refining a process that blended photography, collage, and screen printing. In Karen Kain, he saturates the composition with electric colour, departing from his earlier practice of leaving sections in black and white. The dazzling surface is further enhanced with diamond dust, a material Warhol frequently incorporated during this period to heighten glamour and texture. The shimmering effect complements Kain’s poised elegance as a principal dancer, transforming movement into visual spectacle. As in earlier works such as portraits of Marcia Weisman and the Ladies and Gentlemen series, Warhol experiments with layered colour blocks and collage-like fragmentation. The result is an exuberant celebration of artistry and celebrity, perfectly attuned to the opulence and expressive spirit of the 1980s.
