Kiku (F & S. II 308)
"Flowers frequently recur as a motif in Warhol's art, contrasting with his iconic depictions of celebrities and consumer goods."
Kiku is the second screenprint from the Kiku portfolio of three, commissioned by the Tokyo museum, the Gendai Hanga Center in 1983. The screenprint depicts the delicate chrysanthemum flower, known as 'kiku' in Japanese in a variety of colours, from pink to blue, all outlined in a bright yellow.
Within Japanese culture, the Kiku flower represents perfection and royalty, perhaps not so different from the factors that drew Warhol to his celebrity muses. Flowers frequently recur as a motif in Warhol's art, contrasting with his iconic depictions of celebrities and consumer goods. His 1970 portfolio notably repurposed Patricia Caulfield's photographs of Hibiscus flowers originally featured in Life magazine. Floriography, or the symbolic language of flowers, offers rich material for artists, as each flower species carries distinct emotional and symbolic connotations.
