    Andy Warhol Ladies and Gentlemen (F & S II.126)

Ladies and Gentlemen (1975) is a groundbreaking screenprint by Andy Warhol portraying a drag queen and forming part of the iconic portfolio of the same name. In this celebrated series, Warhol turned his attention to members of New York’s LGBTQ community, producing exuberant, large-scale portraits that rivalled his depictions of celebrities and socialites. Created at the height of 1970s subculture, the works reflect Warhol’s immersion in downtown nightlife and his enduring fascination with identity, performance, and self-fashioning. The series remains one of his most socially resonant bodies of work.

  • About Andy Warhol Ladies and Gentlemen

In the mid-1970s, Warhol was a regular presence in New York nightlife, frequenting venues such as The Gilded Grape, a hub for the gay and transgender community. Encouraged by Italian dealer Luciano Anselmino, he began photographing the vibrant personalities he encountered using Polaroid film. In this screenprint, Warhol outlines the sitter with loose, fluid lines, allowing bold, collage-like blocks of primary colour to dominate the composition. The vivid palette echoes the theatricality of drag makeup while celebrating the individuality of the subject. Though less immediately recognisable than his portraits of icons like Marilyn Monroe or Jacqueline Kennedy OnassisLadies and Gentlemen is a powerful affirmation of visibility and representation within 1970s American culture.
