Muhammad Ali (F & S II. 182)
“I really got to love the athletes because they are the really big stars.” Andy Warhol.
The ‘King of Pop Art’ and the ‘Greatest’ come together in this explosive and tenacious portfolio. Created in 1968, this series is made up of four images of the esteemed boxer Muhammad Ali, showcasing the multifaceted nature of the enigmatic figure.
This print was created at the height of Ali’s world-wide popularity and stardom, and mythologises the athlete into an untouchable pop-art icon. In this piece, Warhol depicts the star with his iconic fist resting on his chin, painted against a vibrant yellow background. His gaze is direct and intimidating, as he gazes out towards the viewer. Like the others in the series, his face is highlighted with extra detail through Warhol’s addition of hand drawn, black lines. A sporadic dash of white and purple add depth and a further sense of excitement to the print. Although his fist is raised, it seems to be in a position of thinking and contemplation, rather than as if he is about to deliver a punch. This alludes to the philanthropic and social fighting side of the boxer. For example, the pose is reminiscent of that of Rodin’s thinker, referencing a more thoughtful side, showing both his emotional and physical capabilities.
