    Andy Warhol Paris Review (F & S II.18)

Paris Review is a 1967 Andy Warhol screenprint commissioned for the prestigious literary magazine of the same name. Known for publishing some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century, The Paris Review represented intellectual and cultural refinement. Warhol’s contribution, however, subverts expectation: rather than a conventional illustration, he reproduced and enlarged a mundane hotel receipt. The work exemplifies Warhol’s Pop Art sensibility, collapsing boundaries between high culture and everyday ephemera. Through wit and appropriation, Paris Reviewtransforms an ordinary transaction into a striking commentary on value, authorship, and artistic hierarchy.

  • About Andy Warhol Paris Review

Produced in 1967, Paris Review showcases Andy Warhol’s fascination with elevating the banal to the realm of fine art. The screenprint reproduces a Regency Hotel receipt listing two bottles of Scotch and one bottle of vodka, enlarged and isolated as a graphic composition. By submitting this image to a magazine associated with literary prestige, Warhol deliberately blurs distinctions between “high” art and “low” culture. The receipt becomes both document and design, its typography and layout recontextualised as aesthetic form. Created alongside works such as Purple CowsLincoln Centre Ticket, and SAS Passenger Ticket, the print reflects Warhol’s sustained interest in everyday objects and transactional imagery. Through repetition and appropriation, Paris Review reveals the overlooked beauty of commercial print and reinforces Warhol’s enduring challenge to artistic convention.

    FAQs

Is Paris Review Andy Warhol's first print?

The print is signed with a rubber stamp, rather than hand-signed.
