    Andy Warhol Pete Rose (F & S II.360B)

Pete Rose  is a dynamic screenprint by Andy Warhol portraying the legendary Cincinnati Reds baseball player Pete Rose. Commissioned in anticipation of Rose surpassing Ty Cobb’s long-standing record, the print captures the athlete at a pivotal cultural moment; he would indeed break Cobb’s record that same year. By the 1970s and 80s, Warhol had recognised the immense celebrity power of sports figures, famously remarking that “sports figures are to the seventies what movie stars were in the sixties.” This portrait exemplifies that conviction.

  • About Andy Warhol Pete Rose

Rose appears in his official kit, bat poised and ready to strike, projecting determination and competitive intensity. Beneath his figure, Warhol boldly enlarges the Cincinnati Reds logo, anchoring the composition in team identity and graphic clarity. The print continues Warhol’s engagement with athletic celebrity first explored in his Athletes series, which included figures such as Muhammad Ali. Collector Richard Weisman, who originally commissioned the Athletesportfolio, noted that the collaboration aimed to bridge audiences; bringing sports fans into galleries and art lovers toward athletic icons. In Pete Rose, Warhol again fuses art and sport, elevating a baseball hero into Pop mythology. Like works such as Speed Skater, the print underscores Warhol’s lifelong fascination with fame across film, music, and athletics.
