Andy Warhol Space Fruit: Lemons (F & S II.196)
Meaning & HistorySpace Fruit: Lemons is incredibly rare work from an edition of ten. The present print portrays ten lemons, scattered across a background of mint green.
Space Fruit: Lemons is a screenprint published by the artist in 1978, a first work in a series of imaginative still lifes entitled Space Fruit. It is an incredibly rare work from an edition of ten.
The present print portrays ten lemons, scattered across a background of mint green. Each lemon is slightly different, having a blue or pink shadow, being sketched or printed by the artist in an altered way, thus imbuing the overall still life with a certain abstractness. The unrealistic quality of Warhol’s fruits compliment his title, Space Fruit. Lemons recalls Warhol’s experiments with collage effects seen in the Gems series as well as earlier works including the Ladies and Gentlemen portfolio showcasing his ability as a colourist and his almost innate skill at composition. We see evidence of Warhol’s famed career as an illustrator with his work reminiscent of earlier series including Flowers Black and White and Flowers Hand-Coloured.
