    Meaning & History

Despite their origins in films and cultural references, these characters have become enduring symbols of idealised childhood memories, shaped by capitalism and consumerism, and have significantly influenced the trajectory of entertainment history.

Bold, graphic and brilliant, Andy Warhol’s Superman is one of ten prints from his 1981 Myths portfolio. In this print, Superman is depicted with his bright red cape billowing behind him and his hand confidently raised towards the sky, epitomising the quintessential cartoon hero in all his grandeur. The use of darker tones accentuates Superman's vivid blues and reds, which contrast sharply with the black background and emphasise his robust physique.Through this screen-printing technique, Warhol amplifies Superman’s power, enriching the cartoon source image by duplicating the figure and overlaying a second version with softer lines, adding an extra layer of drama.

Fascinated by the visual splendour of American popular culture, Warhol produced a remarkable body of work centred on Hollywood celebrities, ranging from commissioned portraits to appropriated photographs. His fascination with celebrity culture remained strong, but over time, his focus expanded to include politicians, fictional characters, and athletes—often referred to as the "movie stars" of the 1970s. The Myths portfolio features ten of the most iconic fictional characters from the early 20th century. These figures range from unwavering heroes like Superman, who fight for the greater good, to ruthless villains such as the Wicked Witch of the West. Warhol contrasts characters representing opposing moral extremes, such as the malevolent Wicked Witch with the mythological hero Superman, to highlight his exploration of the diverse narratives and figures that shape American mythology and popular culture. Despite their origins in films and cultural references, these characters have become enduring symbols of idealised childhood memories, shaped by capitalism and consumerism, and have significantly influenced the trajectory of entertainment history.
