    Andy Warhol Viewpoint (F & S II.329)

Viewpoint (1984) is a rare lithograph by Andy Warhol, issued in a small edition of just 21 impressions. Depicting the side of a New York building, the work stands apart within Warhol’s oeuvre, as he seldom turned his attention to architectural or urban landscape subjects. Best known for his portrayals of celebrities and consumer goods, Warhol here applies his distinctive graphic vocabulary; bold colour, layered lines, and photographic manipulation, to the cityscape, transforming an ordinary façade into a dynamic and visually fragmented composition.

  • About Andy Warhol Viewpoint

The building is presented from a lateral perspective and overlaid with thick, superimposed lines of vivid colour, producing a collage-like effect. Divided into four groups with varying halftones, each impression within the edition is unique, underscoring Warhol’s interest in repetition with variation. The layering disrupts architectural solidity, flattening depth while energising the surface; an approach consistent with his broader Pop sensibility. Although urban landmarks were not a frequent subject in his practice, Warhol did immortalise the Brooklyn Bridge in a similarly stylised manner. In Viewpoint, the everyday New York streetscape becomes a site of experimentation, revealing Warhol’s enduring fascination with the visual rhythms and structures of the city that defined his career.
