    Andy Warhol Wayne Gretzky #99 (F & S II.306)

Wayne Gretzky is a screenprint by Andy Warhol depicting Canada’s most celebrated hockey player. Although Warhol had previously produced his Athletes series in 1977, this portrait stands independently, underscoring Gretzky’s singular cultural stature. Regarded as near royalty in Canada, Gretzky was described by Warhol as “more than a hockey player, he’s an entertainer,” reflecting the artist’s fascination with sports figures as modern celebrities.

  • About Andy Warhol Wayne Gretzky #99

The composition places Gretzky’s portrait and bust in the upper left, while below, a bold linear outline of his hand gripping a hockey stick is superimposed across the surface. The dynamic layering creates a sense of motion and immediacy, hallmarks of Warhol’s late portrait style. The athlete’s jersey number is visible, and Warhol fittingly employs the Edmonton Oilers’ team colours: blue, orange, and white, heightening the work’s connection to Gretzky’s identity. The portrait was facilitated by Vancouver art dealer Frans Wynans, and Gretzky himself was already a collector of Warhol’s work. Like earlier depictions of Muhammad Ali and later prints such as Speed Skater, this work demonstrates Warhol’s ability to merge high art with the so-called “low-brow” world of sport, elevating athletic fame into Pop iconography.
