Released in 2006, Banksy’s Soup Can series reimagines Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup cans, paying homage to the legendary series. However, Banksy flips the narrative by substituting the familiar American brand Campbell’s with Tesco’s Value range, thereby critiquing wealth inequality. Unlike the romanticised aura surrounding Campbell’s soup, Tesco Value represents a stark reality, symbolising British working-class marginalisation and everyday struggles. This choice underscores Banksy’s commentary on societal disparities and challenges the notions of consumerism and class divides depicted in Warhol’s original work.
