Roy Lichtenstein’s screenprint "Brushstrokes," created in 1967, is part of an edition of 300. Designed for the Pasadena Art Museum's 1967 Lichtenstein exhibition, the image was also produced as a poster, highlighting the intertwining of the promotional nature and consumerism of his work. The composition features five interlacing brushstrokes, defined by Lichtenstein’s signature bold black outline, which depict the grooves of glooping paint applied with a feathered brush. The repetitive symmetry of the precisely placed blue Benday dots in the background contrasts with the freer, more impulsive brushstrokes, highlighting the dynamism of the artist’s hand against the repetitive process of the printing press. The parallel Benday dots create a static stillness in the background, while the painterly brushstrokes invite motion and movement.
