The 1978 work form the Surrealist Series by the artist sees the subject matter eschew the usual array of women, the repurposing of Americana and comic books for an abstract exploration of subjects in typical Lichtensteinian prowess. Red, yellow and blues, colours typical of many of the artist’s works, are replaced with a more muted and, dare we say, sophisticated palette of creams, blacks and browns. Central to the pieces a rectangular human form meets wooden board meets shelf appears to look out across a seemingly barren landscape. The horizon in the background is punctuated by a floating leg like figure with two holes and a ponytail whilst a yellow snake-like creature drapes over the base of the strange wooden figure. Like all of the works by this great artist Lichtenstein blends the familiar with the unknown and here we see this theme elevated to new levels.Literature
