Hinckley, who was diagnosed with delusional schizophrenia, believed that his actions would impress actress Jodie Foster. Following the assassination attempt, the artwork depicts Hinckley as a wounded figure, subdued by armed CIA agents. His rebellious act, symbolised by the 1979 Clash song of the same name, is vividly rendered.
Despite firing five shots, none of which resulted in casualties, Hinckley’s attempt to challenge the establishment is ultimately thwarted. He is portrayed as paralysed, serving as a stark symbol of an audacious act of defiance suppressed by the overwhelming power of the state.Provenance
