The Blueprint Drawings is part of an extensive collection of seventeen works created over several weeks in 1980, and revisited in Haring’s final year, 1990. The Blueprint Drawings are notable for their innovative medium—used by Haring for the first time—and their fresh take on motifs commonly featured in his work. The scenes depicted in this series are among the most visually striking and intense in Haring’s body of work.
The collection exudes a violent and chaotic tone. Figures are depicted tumbling down stairs, being attacked by dogs, or hanging by their feet. A palpable sense of fear permeates the scenes, as characters flee from dogs and ominous spaceships, which symbolise 'otherness' and a threatening, alien power. This gruesome portrayal of death reflects Haring’s preoccupation with mortality, as he grappled with AIDS and witnessed its devastating impact on his peers.
