'Glass Vase, Jug and Wheat is a compelling still life image which conflates boundaries of traditional art and modern innovation. As Hockney commented, ‘This is a real new medium. So much variety is possible. You can’t overwork this because it’s not a real surface. And you can put anything on anything: a bright, bright blue on top of an intense yellow.’

Glass Vase, Jug and Wheat, 2020 is an Ipad painting printed on paper, depicting a still life scene reminiscent of many of Hockney’s earlier works, of a glass vase next to a ceramic jug, containing sheaves of fresh wheat. Hockney created these artworks during the global pandemic, isolated in his new 17th century rustic home and surrounding gardens in Beuvron-en-Auge, Normandy.
The still life image takes on a greater symbolism created during a time of isolation where the world was reflecting on the simple things in life: nature, the home, basic comforts. Arguably Hockney chooses to depict sheaves of wheat in the image, since grains of wheat have long symbolised the cycle of seasons and the cycle of life, wheat in a basket is also a symbol of self-sacrifice.
Glass Vase, Jug and Wheat is one of Hockney’ most recent still life depictions; the tone, style and palette of the artwork directly relates back to the traditional still life genre, including old masters like Cezanne, yet in using the Ipad medium, Hockney propels forward his visual language. He uses different ‘brushes’ to create texture and richness to the image, differentiating the shiny pale blue jug with the splattered, old grey vase and the bright, newly harvested bronzed wheatsheaf. All the objects sit against a thicker, darker and heavier brown surface reminiscent of traditional still life depictions.
