    David Hockney’s Hawthorn Bush in Front of a Very Old and Dying Pear Tree is part of a series of work the artist created when he had just moved to La Grande Coeur, the 17th century thatched home in Normandy, France.
    The series of Ipad drawings and inkjet prints on paper entitled, ‘The Arrival of Spring: Normandy’ captured the vibrant surroundings of his rustic countryside home: Hawthorn Bush in Front of a Very Old and Dying Pear Tree refers to the famed pear blossom, which tourists even come to the Beuvron-en-Auge area to experience along guided trails and pathways.
    Whilst the ‘Dying Pear Tree’ in the image could be a still life from Hockney’s own 12-acre garden in Normandy, it could also be one on the historic Pays De Domfront hill, which is full of pear blossom, and was once used as a fortress in wartime.
    The ‘Very Old and Dying Pear Tree’ of the print title is the main focus of the artwork contrasted with the verdant green fields, rolling hills and bush in the background. The sparse, dying pear tree is rich symbolism: the graceful pear trees of Normandy have lived for centuries, longer than the local population, witnessing history (the creation of the Bayeux Tapestry) and surviving atrocities (World War II).
    Hockney creates this simple yet dramatic landscape scene from a focused colour palette of vibrant green, bright blue and oak brown: he utilises modern technology to carry the historical symbolism on for a future generation.
