'What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course, art is about sharing.’ Hockney
Pembroke Studio with Blue Chairs and Lamp is one of David Hockney’s first prints from his groundbreaking 1984 series, Moving Focus, and boldly explores new artistic territory in printmaking, which he would continue to traverse throughout the rest of the series and his career.
The signed lithograph, Pembroke Studio with Blue Chairs and Lamp, sets a similar scene to the artworks, Conversation in the Studio and Pembroke Studio Interior: the artist elevates a simple interior scene through distorted perspective, colouring techniques and new dimensionality to create a dramatic image that impacts a viewer on each glance.
The viewer is presented with a vision of a studio with everyday items such as tables, chairs, desk but our perspective is immediately skewered through the unnatural rendering of angles, including the floor and ceiling: the familiar image becomes strange as if we might as well be viewing it from upside down. Similarly to the Conversation in the Studio print, can we be sure we are viewing this image from ground-level or not?
Hockney was particularly fascinated with perspective at this point in his career:  his attempt to distort the lens through which we view this scene follows the themes of the Moving Focus series, which explores how the gaze of the viewer really ‘sees’ something as opposed to the single angle camera lens through which most art is depicted.
Pembroke Studio with Blue Chairs and Lamp developed Hockney’s multi-dimensional techniques; he drew upon influences, including photographic collage, the multiple viewpoints of Cubism and a bright colour palette and fused them into the lithography medium to create a new essence of space, light and dimension.
