David Hockney The Seven Stone Weakling
‘I believe one needs to be a perpetual student, in order to be a good artist.’ Hockney
The Seven Stone Weakling by David Hockney is a signed, dated etching from an edition of 50. It is plate 3 from this etching, a 16-part series called A Rake’s Progress, which traced ‘the Rake’ an alias for Hockney himself, who visited New York as a young gay artist, in the summer of 1961.In The Seven Stone Weakling, he continues to illustrate his mastery for conveying dynamic scenes through monochrome, pared back compositions: ‘the Rake’ is depicted for the first time full-bodied with his recognisable distinctive features, wide rimmed glasses, and now wearing tailored black trousers. His dandy chic attire sets him apart from the two other figures in the artwork, marathon runners sprinting past him to the finishing line, one has a shirt with a ‘lucky’ number 8.Hockney or his alias ‘The Rake’ is portrayed standing beneath an oak tree, perhaps sheltering from a burst of rain, the leaves of the tree are depicted in a cloud of red ink, suggesting autumn storms are ahead. Arguably this is Central Park, the ‘Rake’ is pictured looking on at these two passing runners, as if in homoerotic desire: in stark contrast to him, the runners are fit and sculpted, one is even topless, suggesting that the ‘Rake’ is ‘The Seven Stone Weakling’ of the title.Hockney is renowned for pushing the boundaries of the printmaking medium throughout his career and as early as 1961, his Royal College of Art days, when he started A Rake’s Progress, Hockney was already reinventing the technical language. The Seven Stone Weakling is an etching made from aquatint which is based on tone rather than lines: enabling the artist to create large areas of shading, colour, depth and ultimately dimension to the image. -
