Grayson Perry
Framed: 106 x 76.5 cm.
“There's an assumption in the art world that all artists are left of centre,” Perry remarks. “They’re just alienating half their audience!” With this work, he questions that assumption head-on, asking what happens when you flip the narrative - when the outsider suddenly embodies power, or when an artist dares to satirise their own tribe.
As with much of Perry’s work, Vote for Me! walks a tightrope between humour and sincerity. It's a layered commentary on identity, privilege, and the tribal nature of modern politics. By inserting himself into the image of Thatcher, he also acknowledges the inevitable tension between success and ideology-“When your tax bill passes the prime minister’s wages,” he quips, “you suddenly get very politically concerned.”
Bold, defiant and sharply funny, Vote for Me! is Grayson Perry at his best: unafraid to challenge expectations, and utterly committed to the art of disruption.
